Book Description

Douglas Hofstadter’s book is concerned directly with the nature of “maps” or links between formal systems. However, according to Hofstadter, the formal system that underlies all mental activity transcends the system that supports it. If life can grow out of the formal chemical substrate of the cell, if consciousness can emerge out of a formal system of firing neurons, then so too will computers attain human intelligence. Gödel, Escher, Bach is a wonderful exploration of fascinating ideas at the heart of cognitive science: meaning, reduction, recursion, and much more.

At the time that it was released it was considered groundbreaking. Today it is considered thought provoking and a must read. You will find yourself rereading and flipping through it often. While it no longer considered new theories, it is still theories we should all consider.
this book is not easy to read, and it was not meant to be easy to read. It will give you a headache even if it makes you ponder everything around you. It is not based off facts. It is math based. It is a work of the authors imagination and could very well be likened to many other theories out there, but that is it a long book of theories.
There are few books that can spark controversy over a theory. This is one of those books that when it was released at the beginning of the 20th century, sparked talk all over the scientific community. It had people talking and arguing over it. The author spoke in a way that he immediately won over people and audiences. Today it is the same. The book is loved. The book is hated. Either way people are still talking about his theories is such a heated way that you would think it was a new release. It is a book that arguably discusses the meaning of self, mathematically of course. There are some that say that it is less about self and more about breaking out of a predetermined life. Really the book is about different things to different people. It is a deep book that sparks the mind in a way that few other books do. It is one that you do not just read once and are done. It needs to be read and studied to be understood. Even if you think you are understanding it, read it again in a few months or years because you will understand it in another depth.
