Spanning areas as diverse as the electronic medical record, searching, protocols, and communications as well as the Internet, Enrico Coiera has succeeded in making this vast and complex area accessible and understandable to the non-specialist, while providing everything that students of medical informatics need to know to accompany their course.

Fully revised, the third edition of Guide to Health Informatics remains essential reading for all health science undergraduates, clinical health professionals, and health service managers who need to appreciate and understand the role of informatics and its associated technologies for optimal practice and service delivery.

Pros
This is a great guide for understanding the basics including the progression of electronic medical records and the searching of the records. It is precise and easy to understand for the average person. You will be able to understand the protocols of internet information and keeping things that are supposed to be private, private.
Cons
This book is for those who are studying the field of medical informatives and, therefore, is not very useful for common office information. The series that the text is set in is hard to follow and it is hard to look up specific items that you need.
Summary
This book is great for teaching the basics of getting and storing the information that goes on medical records. The protocols have changed drastically over the course of a few years and it is nice to see that someone has taken the time to make sure that it is understandable and that it makes sense. If you have questions about what it okay to do with your own medical records or if you need to understand the changes being made within your profession, then you will want to invest in this book. It does explain things fairly well. It is not easy to find certain items at first, but it does get easier with understanding. Overall, if you look at the entire book and take all the good and the bad into consideration I think that you will find that the good definitely outweighs the bad and that this is a positive book to have for understanding the field. If you are a student, it will provide you with the definitive answers that you will come across in the classroom. It is a highly recommended book by those who are top in the field.
