Book Description

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by an uncle he barely knows-a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

Pros
The book offers great insight into Norse mythology and the story ties in well with the interesting characters.
Cons
The story may not be appealing to readers who aren’t interested in mythology and traditional folklore.
Summary
This is the first book in a projected trilogy by prolific writer Rick Riordan who specializes in writing captivating mythical narratives. This book revolves around the main character Magnus Chase who is taken by a Valkyrie to Valhalla where is comes into contact with multitudes of heroes. Magnus is however still preoccupied with events on earth where he has plenty of unfinished business. The plot focuses on Magnus Chase’s efforts to secure the cherished ‘Sword of Summer’ before anyone else. This is an entertaining, fast-paced story with plenty of action sequences. The story is told from a first-person narrator perspective which makes it easier for readers to follow the story and not get confused when following the plot. The book also contains some humor which the author incorporated well to add some synergy to the plot-line.

Pros
This is the book that all fans have been waiting on. It is exciting and the pages seem to turn itself. You get lost in the story and before you know it the book is over. It is a very busy and action packed book. You want to read it, you want to know what is going to happen to the characters.
Cons
There are some fans that do not like series and read it simply because it was part of the series. It is so packed with action that it seems overwhelming and too busy, especially for children. You jump from one major scene to another without time to gain perspective.
Summary
The best thing about this book is that it does not disappoint the fan that has been anxiously anticipating its release. You want to never put the book down once you have it in your hands. The pages propel you through the story as you are drawn to the characters in a real way. You become lost in the world that the author created in a honest and hopeful way. Before you know it you have reached the end of the book and are anticipating the next book with zeal. You must be warned that this is a very busy book and it is hard to find a stopping place, especially if you are reading it to a child. If you are giving it as a gift for a child expect them to be lost in the book from the moment they begin reading. A great addition to the series of stories. The characters are very well developed and have personality that stand alone throughout the book. So grab your hot chocolate and your blanket for this cozy read.
