Book Description

What are you waiting for? An owl, a puppy, a bear, a rabbit, and a pig—all toys arranged on a child’s windowsill—wait for marvelous things to happen in this irresistible picture book by the New York Times–bestselling and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes.

Five friends sit happily on a windowsill, waiting for something amazing to happen. The owl is waiting for the moon. The pig is waiting for the rain. The bear is waiting for the wind. The puppy is waiting for the snow. And the rabbit is just looking out the window because he likes to wait! What will happen? Will patience win in the end? Or someday will the friends stop waiting and do something unexpected?

Waiting is a big part of childhood—waiting in line, waiting to grow up, waiting for something special to happen—but in this book, a child sets the stage and pulls the strings. Timeless, beautiful, and deeply heartfelt, this picture book about imaginative play, the seasons, friendship, and surprises marks a new pinnacle in Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes’s extraordinary career.

“The short sentences of the text flow with the precision one would expect from a master picture-book creator like Henkes. Little ones, to whom each experience is new, will know what it’s like to dream and wait.”—ALA Booklist

If you have a beginner reader in the house, you might like this book. It is a slow paced book that is easy to read and understand. There is no real story line to follow and there are no real characters that you immediately want to know more about. It is a good bedtime book.
The two things that drop the rating on this book are 1) there is no story line, no main character. It is a basic story with beautiful pictures, but it is like looking out the window and pointing out things. 2) One of the toys breaks and dies. This could upset a small child.
A book about being patient and waiting is a great idea. It teaches children how to wait for good things and enjoy the world around them. We live in a fast-paced world and that tends to teach our children that we have to bounce immediately from one project or activity to the next. This book slows you down. It makes you relax. It teaches the joy of just watching the world around us. It puts the fun back into looking out the world. It is perfect for small children because it is easy to read. The downside of this book is that there is not a central character. There are several characters that participate in the story. One toy does break which is equivalent to dying. That can be overwhelming for a child, especially if they are sensitive. This book is great to have in your child's library, you will see that it is unique in many ways. It is one of those books you either love from the first time you read it or dislike from the first read it. Either way be prepared for your child to ask for it over and over again.
